Strategic Study of CAE 2023, Volume 25, Issue 3,   Pages 219-229 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2023.07.025

Abstract:

A smart society is an important component of the digital China strategy; however, the construction of the smart society currently faces practical challenges. Studying a systematic construction method for the smart society will cultivate new competitive advantages for China, promote Chinese path to modernization, and realize the digital China strategy. This study aims to explore methods for building a new type of smart society and maximizing the benefits of social resources. It analyzes the current status and development trends of smart society construction and summarizes the prominent problems including large investment in decentralized construction, low operational efficiency, and uneven development. Following a systems engineering method, an overall architecture for the systematic construction of the smart society is proposed. The architecture adopts a new “1+N+X” model that focuses on coordinating information infrastructure resources of the entire society to build a smart society system capability support platform, thus to expand various business applications accordingly. Moreover, we propose the following suggestions: (1) strengthening top-level design to build a system capability support platform that integrates network, cloud, data, control, and intelligence, thereby forming a basic digital base for the smart society; (2) adopting a new model of systematic construction to promote the sustainable development of smart society construction through efficient operation; (3) establishing  a comprehensive standards and regulations system for the smart society; and (4) providing solid theoretical, technical, and talent support for  the systematic construction of the smart society by building a national laboratory for digital systems engineering of the smart society.

Unified description of sand behavior

Feng ZHANG, Bin YE, Guanlin YE

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 121-150 doi: 10.1007/s11709-011-0104-z

Abstract: In this paper, the mechanical behavior of sand, was systematically described and modeled with a elastoplastic model proposed by Zhang et al. [ ]. Without losing the generality of the sand, a specific sand called as Toyoura sand, a typical clean sand found in Japan, has been discussed in detail. In the model, the results of conventional triaxial tests of the sand under different loading and drainage conditions were simulated with a fixed set of material parameters. The model only employs eight parameters among which five parameters are the same as those used in Cam-clay model. Once the parameters are determined with the conventional drained triaxial compression tests and undrained triaxial cyclic loading tests, then they are fixed to uniquely describe the overall mechanical behaviors of the Toyoura sand, without changing the values of the eight parameters irrespective of what kind of the loadings or the drainage conditions may be. The capability of the model is discussed in a theoretical way.

Communicative Learning: A Unified Learning Formalism Review

Luyao Yuan, Song-Chun Zhu

Engineering 2023, Volume 25, Issue 6,   Pages 77-100 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2022.10.017

Abstract:

In this article, we propose a communicative learning (CL) formalism that unifies existing machine learning paradigms, such as passive learning, active learning, algorithmic teaching, and so forth, and facilitates the development of new learning methods. Arising from human cooperative communication, this formalism poses learning as a communicative process and combines pedagogy with the burgeoning field of machine learning. The pedagogical insight facilitates the adoption of alternative information sources in machine learning besides randomly sampled data, such as intentional messages given by a helpful teacher. More specifically, in CL, a teacher and a student exchange information with each other collaboratively to transmit and acquire certain knowledge. Each agent has a mind, which includes the agent's knowledge, utility, and mental dynamics. To establish effective communication, each agent also needs an estimation of its partner's mind. We define expressive mental representations and learning formulation sufficient for such recursive modeling, which endows CL with human-comparable learning efficiency. We demonstrate the application of CL to several prototypical collaboration tasks and illustrate that this formalism allows learning protocols to go beyond Shannon's communication limit. Finally, we present our contribution to the foundations of learning by putting forth hierarchies in learning and defining the halting problem of learning.

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2022, Volume 9, Issue 1,   Pages 135-147 doi: 10.1007/s42524-020-0118-0

Abstract: Inefficiency in managing resources may bring about severe delays and cost overruns caused by resourceResource leveling is one of the approaches that are used for the management of resources. It aims to minimize fluctuations, peaks, and valleys in resource utilization without changing the completionAlthough the main principle behind traditional resource leveling is achieving an even flow of resourcesThe model is demonstrated by constructing a network and its resource utilization histograms.

A unified power electronic controller for wind driven grid connected wound rotor induction generator

D. R. BINU BEN JOSE, N. AMMASAI GOUNDEN, Raavi SRI NAGA RAMESH

Frontiers in Energy 2013, Volume 7, Issue 1,   Pages 39-48 doi: 10.1007/s11708-012-0229-3

Abstract: The implementation of a simple power converter for a wound rotor induction generator employing a three phase diode bridge rectifier and a line commutated inverter in the rotor circuit for super synchronous speeds has been proposed. The detailed working of the system in power smoothing mode and maximum power point tracking mode is presented. The current flow in the rotor circuit is controlled (by controlling the firing angle of the line commutated inverter) for controlling the stator power in both the modes. An 8 bit PIC microcontroller has been programmed to vary the firing angle of the line commutated inverter. Experiments have been carried out on a 3-phase, 3.73 kW, 400 V, 50 Hz, 4-pole, 1500 r/min wound rotor induction generator and the results obtained with the generator supplying power in both the modes are furnished. The complete scheme has been modeled using MATLAB/SIMULINK blocks and a simulation study has been conducted. The experimental waveforms are compared with the simulation results and a very close agreement between them is observed.

Frontiers of Engineering Management   Pages 710-726 doi: 10.1007/s42524-023-0278-9

Abstract: In recent decades, healthcare providers have faced mounting pressure to effectively manage highly perishable and limited medical resources. This article offers a comprehensive review of supply chain management pertaining to such resources, which include transplantable organs and healthcare products. The review encompasses 93 publications from 1990 to 2022, illustrating a discernible upward trajectory in annual publications. The surveyed literature is categorized into three levels: Strategic, tactical, and operational. Key problem attributes and methodologies are analyzed through the assessment of pertinent publications for each problem level. Furthermore, research on service innovation, decision analytics, and supply chain resilience elucidates potential areas for future research.
